It means liver cheese but it is not made out of liver. More like a big slab of sausage, sometimes with cheese, sometimes with chili and paprika, sometimes just all sausage. A big chunk of it comes sandwiched between a twisted roll called a semmerl. Both the semmerl and the leberkaese is to be found in Austria.
