that top of the mountain feeling.

OK.

I think I held out long enough on the rest of the pictures of the tavern.

There is a lot to be said about how many great restaurants there are in the world. Going by one measure alone, the Michelin guide lists over 45,000 in 23 countries.

Now add the other countries the Michelin guide has condescendingly glossed over...
...count the number of times our egos have impressed (read imposed) upon others of the great great place we've been to
...not forgetting the other ones you've previewed before the magazine reviews
...and the true random gems we've had the good fortune to stumble upon.

If, like me, you've done all of the above, then by some crude mathematical calculation, the number quadruples, conservatively.

But there aren't that many restaurants that leave us thinking, filled with bigger thoughts than that grand meal. This is one of them.

As I have no time now, you'll just have to look at the pictures and figure it out. Or go there yourself.

Walk up this gravel path that doesn't seem to go anywhere.
You'll come to this unassuming building eventually.

What the tavern looks like from the front.
No signage whatsoever.
No one is there to greet you apart from fellow travellers.

Outdoor seating right in front of the tavern.

Go further up the path...

walk under some grape vines...

You'll get to more outdoor seating.

with an equally excellent view.

Inside the tavern...

it is nothing less than an a working tavern.

Find everything you'll need for lunch - knives, chopping board, serviettes, bottle openers, salt, pepper, hard boiled eggs.

A variety of cheese and salumi. The salumi is made by him.

A rickety old fridge that does not look promising at first...

but is stocked with ice cold juice, beer and enough prosecco to get a party very drunk.

Inside the mesh cabinet.

lies more salumi, fresh bread, biscotti and sweet torta.

The price list.

The money box to pay for what you ate.
I think this is the perfect location for a social experiment on honesty.

As if all of that is not enough, take this path that goes around the back of the tavern...
...and this is the view from up top.

Best place I have found and the best place I have eaten at on this trip.

By far.
