living in the past.

What : Palio di Parma (held at the end of Festival del Prosciutto)
Where : Parma, Italy
When : 18-19 September 2010

The procession marching across town.

Drums were heard playing everywhere.
The whole village marched past and headed towards the town square.
Flag throwers toss flags high up into the air and across to each other.
This guy juggled about 10 flags on his own, using his hands and legs.
All happening in the Piazza della Pilotta.
Village and animals filled the piazza, like how it used to be.

Various craftsmen...
...women...
and kids selling wares...

Cottage industries of the past...
...spinning yarn...
...carding wool before the spinning happens...
Stone carving.
Weaving loom.
And of course there was food to sample.
Lard with spices.
Medieval bread.

How flour was milled.

Ancient kamut grain.
Medieval sieve.
Ricotta was eaten with a variety of jam and honey.
I chose fig jam.
And the men stood around and talked about their swords and stuff.
